Yuneec E430 Electric Plane

Yuneec offers a two-seat electric-powered aircraft, the e430. And the best part, it will be ready to buy next year(2011)! If the company delivers on its promise, this electrically powered plane could change the world, costing just two dollars per hour to power its flight. Priced around $89,000.
"Electric flight, once seen as futuristic, has arrived and with E430’s flight times of between 1.5 and 3 hours (depending on configuration) electric flight now becomes a realistic power source for sport aviation. Charging times of 3 hours for as little as $5 make electric a really low cost way to fly and with only 2 main moving parts in the motor (the bearings) the reliability and maintenance are like nothing seen before."

This Year of Tiger

According to the Chinese Zodiac, the Year of 2010 is the Year of a Golden Tiger, which begins on February 14, 2010 and ends on February 2, 2011.
The Tiger is the third sign in the cycle of Chinese Zodiac, which consists of 12 animal signs. It is a sign of courage. This fearless and fiery fighter is revered by the ancient Chinese as the sign that wards off the three main disasters of a household: fire, thieves and ghosts. On New Year's day itself, it is beneficial to celebrate, to be happy, to have smiling faces, and to refrain from scowling, quarreling, or criticizing anyone.

The Deadliest place on Earth? Surviving Cueva de los Cristales - The Giant Crystal Cave

A geological wonder of immense proportions and intense beauty can be found in the Chihuahuan Desert of Mexico… 1000+ feet below the surface. The Cueva de los Cristales - the Giant Crystal Cave – is also one of the most deadly environments on the planet.

For his BBC series How Earth Made Us, filmmaker Paul Williams discovered firsthand the scorching heat and toxic setting that has kept humans away from the crystal phenomenon. ”The coolest part of the caves is your lungs and so moist air starts to accumulate in them… leading to respiratory difficulties.”

Cueva de los Cristales is the incarnation of our most awesome science fiction imaginations – Jules Verne’s Journey to the Centre of the Earth, Superman’s Fortress of Solitude. At about the same time as humans first ventured out of Africa, these crystals began to slowly grow. For half a million years they remained protected and nurtured by a womb of hot hydrothermal fluids rich with minerals.

It wasn’t until 2001 that miners, searching for lead, eventually penetrated the cave wall and brought it to light.

Mobile Phone that Runs on Coke

Designer Daizi Zheng has designed an eco friendly phone for Nokia, which runs on Coca-Cola drinks. Yes, its fuel cells generate electricity from carbohydrates(sugar) in the Coke and it can run on any sugary water, not just Coke. Daizi writes:
"The concept is using bio battery to replace the traditional battery to create a pollution free environment. Bio battery is an ecologically friendly energy generates electricity from carbohydrates (currently sugar) and utilizes enzymes as the catalyst. By using bio battery as the power source of the phone, it only needs a pack of sugary drink and it generates water and oxygen while the battery dies out.
Bio battery has the potential to operate three to four times longer on a single charge than conventional lithium batteries and it could be fully biodegradable. Meanwhile, it brings a whole new perception to batteries and afternoon tea."

Licence to Chill - James Bond lolly

"Many women would admit wanting to put their lips to James Bond star Daniel Craig’s sculpted torso. An UK ice cream company created the purple "licence to chill" lolly after asking more than 1,000 women which male would like to see on the end of a stick. Del Monte Superfruit Smoothies, who produced the limited edition replica lollies, said artists ‘worked tirelessly’ to recreate a sculpture of 41-year-old Craig in the scene where he emerges from the sea in Casino Royale
The Daniel Craig smoothie lollies are blueberry, pomegranate and cranberry flavoured and under 100 calories each. They are to be distributed during the first National Ice Cream Week which starts today and ends on June 7."

Pink Snow

“It looks like Stevie Famulari of Fargo lives in Candy Land – her front yard, Queen Frostine’s frothy pink ice cream sea. But it’s not ice cream or cotton candy that billows over her boulevard at 620 10th Ave. Famulari’s front yard is piled with the same stuff that fills every other yard in town. Only her snow is pink. Famulari is an environmental artist and a landscape architecture professor at North Dakota State University. She changes the color of her snow with each new layer that falls. She plans to paint the next snowfall a purplish blue and the one after that will be black. She chose her colors to become darker as the season progresses. When the snow melts, she expects the older layers to be revealed.
Famulari is avoiding yellow, “for obvious reasons,” she said, and she’s avoiding green because lawns are green every other time of the year. Well, at least other peoples’ lawns are green every other time of the year.
This is the first time Famulari has painted her snow, but her yard is always changing. Last year she painted her grass in a checkerboard pattern. The year before that, she sculpted crop circle patterns into her grass."

Creative Light Writing Proposal

When Derick wanted to propose to his girlfriend Emily, he decided to do it in a big way. A really big way: by creating a light writing proposal that covered several blocks in downtown Raleigh, North Carolina.

It took Derick and his friends 3 nights of shooting and over 800 exposures to make the image.
"I knew I wanted to find a very special way to propose to a very special woman. I liked the look of light writing, but I wanted to do something on a much larger scale. To my knowledge, a light writing of this size had never been done before. I had the idea of placing a camera at the top of a tall building and mapping out the words “Emily, will you marry me?” over part of the city. I used Google Earth to check out the views from several large buildings in downtown Raleigh, N.C. Since none of the letters could fall on areas that were inaccessible by foot, the requirements for the vantage point were very specific. I finally found the perfect spot – the top of the Clarion hotel. Luckily, the Clarion has a restaurant that is open to the public on the top floor. I went up one afternoon and snapped some pics for reference."

Nomura jellyfish - the giants

Nomura jellyfish are huge creatures which can grow to 6.5 feet (2 meters) wide and weigh up to 450 pounds (220 kilograms). Common in Chinese and Korean waters, their population is on the rise in the fishing waters off Japan causing chaos as they poison fish with their toxic stings and clogg fishing nets.
